5 Tool Player, or a 12 Tool Leader

What is a 5 tool player?

The five tool player is a term describing a baseball player, usually a position player, that has five of the tools that scouts look for.  The 5 tools that scouts look for in a player are:

  1. Hitting for Power
  2. Hitting for Average
  3. Fielding Ability
  4. Throwing Ability
  5. Speed


What is a 12 tool Rare Leader?

The 12 tool Rare Leader is a term describing a Leader, that has 12 of the tools mastered that engaged teams and successful business look for.  The 12 tools to look for in Rare Leader are:

  1. Integrity Of Character
  2. Charisma
  3. Inner Strength
  4. Relationships
  5. Delegation
  6. Working With Ambiguity
  7. Driven To Achieve
  8. Taking Ownership
  9. Decision Making
  10. Vision
  11. Planning To Execute
  12. Outlook For The Future

Being great at all 12 tools will help to make you a Rare Leader.  If you are great in 10 out of the 12 tools and only good in the 11th, or 12th, well then you are not a 12 tool Rare Leader.  In order to be a 12 tool Rare Leader, you have to be GREAT in all of the twelve tools.  That’s why 12 tool Rare Leaders are so hard to find and why engaged teams, and successful businesses love them.

These 12 Competencies are the measurable or observable knowledge, skills, abilities, and behaviors critical to successful job performance, and in this specific case, Leadership.

We could spend a lifetime reading books, attending seminars, and studying the practices of great leaders.  Through this careful research, you would discover a consistent pattern of observed behaviors predicting the potential of great success as a Leader.  We call these twelve behaviors and characteristics the tools of a Rare Leader™.
